Broadway’s Belasco Theatre

From iconic historic preservation to production work on some of Broadway’s hottest shows, our Entertainment Engineering team has been adapting the Belasco Theatre to meet its ever-changing needs for decades.

Cirque Du Soleil’s KA - World’s Largest Custom Theatrical Machinery

Cirque Du Soleil’s KA at MGM Grand

Our entertainment engineering team delivered the theater engineering behind Cirque du Soleil’s KÀ at MGM Grand, designing the custom show-action machinery and rigging that enables its signature moving stages. The work included concept-to-design engineering and parametric studies to size and refine major stage systems, including the sand/cliff deck and gantry crane and the large tatami deck with a sliding, multi-stage mechanism that creates the illusion of floating. We also engineered associated production rigging and seismic upgrades, coordinating closely with fabrication and installation teams to meet demanding performance and schedule requirements.

How Math, Science, and Engineering Bring Broadway Shows to Life, A Podcast

"There was a lot of theater construction in the 1920s, right after World War I ended, and people were thrilled at the time. There was money, and many theaters were constructed all over the country...Flash forward to the modern era, and it’s a real challenge to keep shows relevant to a modern audience in these old antique theaters...We’ve developed methods for gathering information from these old theaters and working with the owners or productions to find ways around the limitations or to incrementally increase them."

Metropolitan Opera House Modernization

Metropolitan Opera House

As prime consultant for the Metropolitan Opera House’s multi-year modernization, our entertainment engineering team upgraded the over-stage infrastructure to support a new automated rigging system while maintaining uninterrupted 24/7 operations. Work included structural assessment of the gridirons, roof trusses, and framing to confirm capacity for new winches and hoists, followed by targeted reinforcements and new winch frame designs in coordination with the rigging vendor. The team also designed an upstage drive rack room addition and an electrical changeover plan for a seamless system switchover.
