Marine Structural Design + Geotechnical Engineering

Marine Structural Design + Geotechnical Engineering

Need support for a pier, bulkhead, marina, ferry landing, terminal, floating structure, or waterfront rehabilitation project? Talk to our marine engineering team about structural systems, subsurface conditions, permitting, constructability, and next steps.

Headshot of Craig Plate, PE, Inspection and Rehabilitation Lead at McLaren, a Division of KCI

Marine Structural Design + Geotechnical Engineering Lead

Waterfront projects require structural systems that can perform in demanding soil, water, wave, vessel, and operational conditions. From piers, bulkheads, ferry landings, marinas, ports, terminals, floating structures, and waterfront redevelopment to offshore wind support and marine infrastructure rehabilitation, marine structural engineering and marine geotechnical engineering need to work together from the start.

KCI, formerly McLaren Engineering Group, provides integrated marine structural and geotechnical engineering services to help clients evaluate site conditions, design durable waterfront structures, address foundation and subsurface challenges, support permitting, and move projects through construction. Our multidisciplinary team develops practical solutions for new construction, rehabilitation, dredging, berthing and mooring conditions, shoreline stability, construction documents, cost estimating, and construction-phase support.

Marine Structural + Geotechnical Engineering Services:

Coastal, Structural + Geotechnical

Waterfront Engineering
from Concept to Construction

Our approach brings together coastal, structural, and geotechnical engineering principles to support waterfront projects from early planning through construction. Services may include site selection and characterization, concept design, structural and geotechnical analyses, berthing and mooring evaluations, regulatory permitting, marine construction cost estimating, contract drawings and specifications, and construction-phase support.

By coordinating these disciplines early, our team helps develop marine engineering solutions that are durable, constructible, cost-effective, and responsive to the site’s environmental, operational, and subsurface conditions.

Marine Structural Engineering

Design and rehabilitation support for piers, bulkheads, wharves, marinas, ferry landings, floating structures, marinas, marine terminals, and waterfront infrastructure exposed to wave, current, vessel, berthing, mooring, and operational loads.

Marine Geotechnical Engineering

Engineering support for subsurface investigations, site characterization, foundation design, pile-supported structures, shoreline stability, settlement, scour, dredging considerations, and constructability for piers, bulkheads, terminals, ferry landings, marinas, and other waterfront structures.

Port Newark Berth 3 Wharf Reconstruction | NJ

Marine Structural Engineering for a Major Port Facility
This wharf reconstruction project supported the modernization of Berth 3 at Port Newark, one of the region’s most active marine terminals. The work included marine structural engineering for wharf replacement, pier design, foundation design, phased construction stability, floating dock and anchorage systems, and coordination with adjacent berth operations. Underwater dive inspections and condition assessments helped inform practical repair and reconstruction strategies for a busy working waterfront environment.

Brooklyn Navy Yard Waterfront Development | NY

Marine Structural Engineering, Inspections + Waterfront Rehabilitation in NYC
This long-term waterfront revitalization effort included marine engineering and rehabilitation services across multiple piers, berths, bulkheads, seawalls, wharves, and relieving platforms. The work included above-water and underwater inspections, marine borer studies, condition assessments, and rehabilitation design for aging marine structures, helping advance resilient repairs for one of New York City’s most important working waterfronts.
