Issy Block and Nadia Itani, two of our entertainment engineers, took the crew on a tour of the James Earl Jones Theatre as they shared insights into how engineering brings the magic of Broadway to life!
They revealed how structural engineering is a driving force behind every performance. From rigging and moving set pieces to the hidden structures that keep productions running seamlessly, engineering is woven into the very fabric of Broadway—working behind the scenes to bring the magic to life.
McLaren’s engineer-diver Lisa Bratton took us on an underwater journey at Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, NY. Performing a live demonstration in the water, Lisa provided an inside look at the intricate process of an underwater structural inspection—showing that engineering often dives deeper than you might think.
As both a licensed engineer and certified commercial diver, Lisa conducts hands-on assessments of critical marine infrastructure, including piers, bulkheads, and foundations. These inspections help identify structural concerns that aren’t visible from above the surface and are essential to maintaining the integrity and safety of waterfront systems.
Her work exemplifies how McLaren’s marine engineering team designs solutions that protect, preserve, and enhance infrastructure in challenging coastal environments. By taking audiences underwater, Lisa offers a unique view into the intersection of engineering and diving—and how specialized expertise is helping to support and safeguard our communities and waterways.
