Electric Vehicle Charging Expansion at Newark Airport – Engineering and Surveying

To support the growing demand for electric vehicle infrastructure, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is installing four Direct Current Fast Chargers (DCFC) in the Cell Phone Lot of Parking Lot P-4. McLaren Engineering Group is serving as the Engineer of Record for both civil and structural disciplines, providing construction-phase engineering and structural special inspections.

Civil, Structural, and Surveying Services for Newark Airport’s Cell Phone Lot Fast EV Charging Stations

Structural Engineering

McLaren is providing structural engineering design and construction support services associated with the construction of the DCFC concrete pads, the concrete pad for the distribution panel in the Lot P-4 Cell Phone Lot, and the conduit supports in the parking garage. This includes the design development of the primary foundation elements and design of conduit supports connected to the garage structure.

During construction, McLaren performed special inspections for structural components including the post installed anchors and cast-in-place concrete.

Civil Engineering

McLaren is delivering civil and traffic engineering services for the installation of four DCFC and associated infrastructure. This includes:

  • Concrete pads for DCFC units and distribution panels
  • Underground conduit installation
  • Conceptual site plan development
  • Compliance with Port Authority standards and the Tenant Construction Alteration Process (TCAP)
  • A Soil Erosion and Sediment Control Plan
  • A Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plan to accommodate roadway and partial lot closures during construction

Surveying

To inform design and construction efforts, McLaren is performed a detailed topographic survey of the site. This included mapping of:

  • Pavement, curbs, striping, and signage
  • Buildings, walls, and fences
  • Slopes, grade breaks, and utility mark-outs
  • Above-ground utilities such as poles and overhead wires
