Green Infrastrure Construction in Renovated NYC Parks

A CSO Solution

Green Infrastructure
In Renovated NYC Parks

McLaren is proud to have partnered with Quennell Rothschild & Partners on renovating NYC parks that will not only help provide local green space for neighborhoods in need, it will also help keep our waterways cleaner. McLaren is engineering a variety of stormwater management features for these parks located within the NYCDEP’s Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Priority Watershed.

Stormwater such as surface water running off city streets and paved lots is the leading cause of pollution of streams, rivers, and oceans. The goal of the project is to divert stormwater from adjacent streets to Green Infrastructure (GI) practices located in the facilities of the community parks. These practices will allow for water to be infiltrated or stored on-site, with overflow pipes to convey the water back to the existing combined sewers.

Read the article “Parks Progress” to find out more about the projects and challenges.

Recently Opened NYC Parks

McLaren recently engineered a variety of stormwater management features for three NYC community parks, as part of a larger $24M park renovation project! McLaren is proud to be a part of the green infrastructure design practices to reduce stormwater runoff to NYCDEP’s Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) at Hilltop Playground in Brooklyn, Lyons Square Playground in the Bronx and Martin Luther King, Jr. Playground in Manhattan.

Longfellow Playground

McLaren recently provided site/civil services, green infrastructure (GI) design and a variety of stormwater management features for the newly opened Longfellow Playground in Hunts Point, Bronx. This project is part of a large $318 million NYC community parks renovation program, which aims to helps to restore and improve city parks. After a decade of being closed due to structural safety concerns, the Longfellow Playground was completely reconstructed, adding a play area with a tree house motif, mini stage, efficient spray showers with timers, new seating areas, bike racks, a new fence, lighting, landscaping, subsurface stabilization and greenery.
