At the intersection of culture and community you’ll find the ‘MCHotel’, Montclair’s first full-service hotel in 80 years. McLaren served as the structural engineer-of-record and contractor’s engineer for this 159-room, 120,000-square-foot culturally driven hotel that opened last week in the heart of the thriving artistic community in Montclair, New Jersey.
“Along with our partners, our dream was to bring forth the most luxurious boutique hotel the state of New Jersey has ever seen,” said Jeff Sica, CEO of Circle Squared Alternative Investments. “This was a project that took incredible effort and the contributions of everyone involved has truly raised the bar for what’s possible in the world of commercial real estate and private investing.”
Featuring an 8-story steel tower, and extensive green space on the roof scheduled to open in the fall, McLaren engineered the boutique hotel’s 6-levels of light gage bearing wall construction above steel transfer for the luxury hotel rooms. The close proximity of other structures in this high traffic area required the use of underpinning and mini piles on the zero-lot line. McLaren worked closely with the project’s civil engineer to reduce magnitude of hydrostatic pressure and ergo the quantity necessary to ballast the building against “buoyancy” during a 50-year storm event.
