Walktober
2025

Every Step Counts

McLaren, a Division of KCI, is hosting our sixth annual Walktober — a team step challenge open to all staff and members of our AEC community. It’s all about moving more, connecting with colleagues and clients, and having fun while competing for weekly prizes.

No matter your pace, everyone’s welcome to join in and step it up!

Wellness, Community +
A Good Time

Walktober is about more than steps. It’s about coming together as a community, supporting one another, and building healthy habits that last beyond the month. By staying active, we’re boosting both our own health and wellness — and having fun along the way.

Step Counting +
Bike Conversion

Use a fitness tracker to track your daily steps.

Tip: Your smartphone usually has a built-in fitness tracker or downloadable app.

Bike Conversion

To help track bicycling, here is a helpful conversion formula:

  • Easy (~10 mph) = 133 Steps per Minute
  • Moderate (~13 mph) = 178 Steps per Minute
  • Vigorous (~15 mph) = 222 Steps per Minute

Scavenger Hunt
Challenges

In addition to getting our steps we will be doing a fun scavenger hunt challenge! We will kick off each week with a different scavenger hunt photo challenge. These photos will be shared on the website for all to see, and those of you who submit photos will be entered into a weekly raffle for KCI swag.

Join in as often as you’d like – the more weeks you participate, the more chances you have to win!

FAQ

The Challenge

  • How do I log my steps?
    • Once the competition starts…enter your steps into the spreadsheet above, Log Your Steps. There is one sheet per team, and you can access your team by selecting the tab (tabs are located on the bottom of the page) or using the link in the Instructions tab. Then enter your daily step total under your column name. Please don’t modify anything other than your personal steps in the spreadsheet.
  • Do I have to hit save on the spreadsheet?
    • No, everything you enter is automatically saved.
  • Do I have to enter my steps every day?
    • No, you can enter them any day or even once a week. However, if you want to be counted in the Weekly Update, you should have your steps entered by 9am EST on the due date indicated in the calendar above.
  • If I don’t enter by steps by 9am EST on the due date will my steps still be counted?
    • Yes, they will still be counted. They will just be reflected in the next week’s Weekly Update count.
  • How do I see my team’s progress?
    • You can see live progress of your team’s steps as you enter your steps. We will do weekly data collection for progress updates that will be shared on this page. This weekly data collection will be done at 9AM EST on the due date indicated in the calendar above, so make sure your updates are in by then if you want to be counted for that week’s progress.
  • How long does the challenge last?
    • October 1-31.
  • Do I need an app or a special device to join?
    • Yes. Most smartphones have health apps already installed on them that will track your steps, and there are also lots of free apps you can download that will do this. We will provide a miles to steps converter for biking.
  • I am recovering from knee surgery, would joining be a detriment to my team?
    • Speak with your physician. The goal of Walktober is to get moving. Every step you take (at your own pace) can be a win towards collaboration, connection and wellness.

Prizes

Scavenger Hunt

  • How do I participate in the scavenger hunt?
    • Submit weekly challenge photos by emailing them and a brief description to walktober@kci.com. By submitting your photos you are giving KCI permission to use and post the photos publicly.
  • When do I have to submit my weekly scavenger hunt photos by?
    • For your scavenger hunt photo (jpg image files preferred, but all photo extensions welcome) to be entered into the drawing, you must submit the photo to walktober@kci.com by 9am EST on the due date indicated in the calendar above.
  • Do scavenger hunt photos need to be taken that week, or can I submit old photos taken prior to that week?
    • Only photos that are taken between the dates of that week’s challenge are eligible for submission. For example, if you take a photo and submit it during week 1, you can NOT re-submit that same photo during a later week.
  • What are the scavenger hunt prizes?
    • Those of you who submit photos will be entered into a weekly raffle for company swag (1 entry per week).
  • Do I get a bonus point for submitting multiple photos in 1 week?
    • Only 1 submission per scavenger hunt week will be entered into that week’s raffle.
  • If multiple participants are in the scavenger hunt photo submission, who gets the raffle entry?
    • The person who submitted the photo. All participants in the photo may submit the same photo for credit.
  • How do bonus points work in the scavenger hunt?
    • At the end of the month we will do 1 final raffle where all photo submitters are re-entered into a drawing. As a BONUS, if your photo includes a KCI project or logo you will get 2 entries for that photo in the month-end drawing! For example, if you submit a scavenger hunt entry for 3 of the weeks with a KCI logo, besides being awesome kudos you will get 1 entry per week, and in the bonus raffle you will get 6 entries (entry + bonus (x3)).

Top Stepper + Winning Team

  • Is there a prize for the winning team or a larger incentive we are working toward?
    • Each team’s score will be based on its top 5 steppers. All members of the winning team (max of 12 people) will receive a trophy.
  • Will the top stepper also win a prize?
    • Yes, the top stepper of Walktober will get a swag and a thropy, whether or not they are on the winning team.
  • What happens if I stop entering steps, but my team wins the competition?
    • Steps can be entered at any time up until the overall deadline for the competition. If steps are not recorded for more than half of the days, you may not be eligible for the overall prize.
  • Will there also be a prize towards charity?
    • No, not this year. Last year, we all stepped toward a shared goal, and McLaren donated $2,500 to an AEC charity when we reached it. While there’s no charity prize this time, we still encourage everyone to participate and stay active together!
