Sea Glass Carousel: Designers Solve Challenge of All-Electric Ride Structure

Designing a reliable carousel ride driven exclusively by electric power is a formidable undertaking. The challenge is multiplied when the ride structure is set in an outdoor, oceanside environment sensitive to temperature changes. The SeaGlass Carousel ride posed such a challenge, but its designing engineers were able to devise a solution that addressed the technical issues while, at the same time, illustrating the project’s theme as a vibrant celebration of marine life.
McLaren Assists Elvis' Return in "Viva Elvis"
December 10, 2009 - 5:45pm — J. CastellanoFor the seventh time in as many shows, McLaren played an active – albeit, behind the scenes – role in a Cirque du Soleil production.
This time, Elvis is being brought back to the fore in “Viva Elvis,” which is set to open December 18 at Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas’ City Center complex. “Elvis” contains some of the largest pieces of scenery and performer flying equipment ever built for a theatrical production. Hired by Cirque Du Soleil, Stage Technologies and Setpoint Design & Production, McLaren provided structural and mechanical engineering for various parts of the show.

December 4, 2009 - 11:36am — J. CastellanoWhen the innovative Sobella Retail space of The Crystals at City Center in Las Vegas opened yesterday, the public got its first look at the Tree House, the sculptural centerpiece of the new retail area.
This Tree House, however, is not some rickety structure thrown together by a group of 12-year-olds from scrap lumber in dad’s garage. Nor is it a pre-fabricated tree house kit with a slide, fire pole, and rope swing like those sold in Wal-Mart. No, this is altogether different.
Fort of Solitude: Long inaccessible Fort Totten prepares for new public park

One of the most impressive New York sites you may have never heard of, Fort Totten is a 149-acre peninsula jutting off the coast of Bayside, Queens, with Civil War–era fortifications, meditative grounds, and views of Long Island Sound. But over the last half-century it has had few visitors, being home to a U.S. Army installation and largely barred to the public until 2005, when the first limited access opened to 50 acres acquired by the New York City Parks Department.

The New York Metropolitan Chapter of the American Public Works Association recognized the Town of Orangetown Highway Department for exemplary performance on the Tappan drainage and road improvement project completed this year. For this accomplishment, the department received the 2009 Municipal Agency Award from the association.
