McLaren Volunteers

Realistic Engineering
Middle School Challenge

40th Philanthropic Events - Middle School Challenge

McLaren employees volunteered at the South Orangetown Middle School in Blauvelt, NY, last week. They gave a lesson and created a fun and realistic engineering challenge for the students. Each group was tasked with choosing materials (i.e. timber, concrete, or steel), adhering to design parameters (e.g. square footage), and optimizing either cost or time.

The students performed this task using Tinkercad modules predeveloped by McLaren. Each Tinkercad block was assigned a specific value for surface area, material, cost, and build time; giving students a real feel for engineering design.

“I was so happy to be able to get the McLaren team here to work with the students,” said SOMS Enrichment & Technology Teacher Andrew McIntosh. “It gave them an entirely different perspective to work with a definite set of considerations such as budget and time.”
