Marina Inspections and Surveying at Newport

Immediately after Superstorm Sandy, McLaren Engineering Group was retained to perform a bathymetric survey and above and underwater inspections of the Newport Marina in Jersey City, New Jersey. The floating docks, floating breakwater, wave fences, finger piers, electrical and communication cables along the docks and water lines were inspected for structural damage. Based on the marina inspections, McLaren provided recommended repairs.

A bathymetric survey of the marina channels and turning basins were conducted using the following survey equipment:

  • Trimble R8 RTK with KEYNET corrections for hydro for tide and HZ location
  • Seafloor sonarmite and transducer for soundings to mudline
  • Hypack 2012
  • R-8 GPS for leadlines along the docks

A survey map was prepared to show the contours of the marina’s changed environment, due to the storm.
