The Bayonne Golf Club was named the “most audacious golf course in the world” by Sports Illustrated. Formerly a landfill, the 18-hole links course borders the Upper New York Bay and has stunning views of New York City. The clubhouse development sits high on a landfill hill and features a round, 80-foot lighthouse structure that has been integrated into the design of the building, plus a prestigious locker room, taproom, library and outdoor veranda.
McLaren Engineering Group provided the structural design for the stone-covered, reinforced concrete cantilever retaining walls at the clubhouse loading dock, as well as the foundation of the 135-foot flagpole which flies a 30-by-60-foot flag.
McLaren provided an innovative foundation design and structural design of the two-story, steel-framed clubhouse in Bayonne, New Jersey that has a total floor area of 35,000 square feet and includes a 12-foot basement level. Foundation design services included the design of a mat foundation slab, which mitigated the potential for differential settling due to the processed dredge material and organic fill present on the clubhouse site.
McLaren designed the clubhouse to be sufficiently stiff to prevent the formation of differentiated settlement cracks. A comparative analysis was performed at the landfill development site which considered alternate framing schemes. Final construction documents and specifications were prepared for the project and McLaren performed construction administration services.
McLaren also assisted in developing details for the Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) facade system. The clubhouse is one of the few buildings in the tri-state area composed of this material.
