Project Overview: 
McLaren performed structural investigation, design, and construction phase services as part of the A/E team for the complete restoration and renovation of a 260,000 gallon salt water tank. The crown jewel of the National Aquarium’s Pier 3 Building, the “Blacktip Reef Exhibit” includes a large curved acrylic viewing panel, cantilevered viewing gallery with glass handrails, and was constructed without disturbing everyday operations of the aquarium.
McLaren's Role: 
Challenged with performing the investigation and design of the renovated space while the exhibit area was full of water, McLaren utilized in house dive teams to gather information and extract core samples of the existing concrete. Using 3-D finite element structural modeling and historical investigations and analysis, McLaren prepared bid and construction documents for the renovations that were required to transform the exhibit into the new “Blacktip Reef Exhibit”. Significant renovations included the removal of an existing column and slab system to permit the construction of a new cantilevered viewing gallery and removal of large parts of the original tank to accommodate the 27’ x 8’ tall x 3" thick curved acrylic viewing panel. Due to the open nature of the Pier 3 Building, McLaren worked closely with a scaffolding company to enable a temporary “lid” to be installed over the exhibit to minimize noise, dust, and visibility to the rest of the building during the construction phase.
