Rocky On Broadway

McLaren performed structural engineering on various scenic elements and rigging for Rocky Broadway. Rocky Broadway is a musical based on the 1976 movie Rocky. It tells the story of a boxer who lives the American Dream.

McLaren engineered scenic elements (e.g. boxing ring, gantry structure and supports, flying catwalk, etc.) built by Global Scenic Services to achieve the set designer’s vision of the production, while accommodating the limits to size and weight imposed by the structure of this landmark theater. Additionally, McLaren designed reinforcing for the existing building elements, such as the stage right fly floor, to accommodate the large loads imposed on them by the show.

The evaluation of the Winter Garden Theater was built on McLaren’s in-depth understanding of the building from a major renovation project conducted for the owner in 2000-2001.

A significant challenge was planning for and implementing a major structural and rigging system with the prior show running. Some areas were only accessible for the short period of time after the prior show loaded out of the theater and before the new show elements were scheduled to load into the theater. In some cases, conditions were assessed as soon as these areas were available and structural details were developed in a matter of days. This required advance planning of several possible scenarios, as well as close coordination between McLaren, production, and contractors.

Rocky started previews on February 13, 2014 and opened March 13, 2014. Since then the show has won the following awards:

  • 2014 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design of a Musical
  • 2014 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Set Design
