McLaren Designs Rotation Mechanism for Paola Pivi How I Roll Kinetic Sculpture

Paola Pivi’s “How I Roll” kinetic sculpture incorporates a full size Piper Seneca plane, supported at the wingtips rotating end over end. In order to realize the artists dream, the Public Art Fund looked to McLaren to develop the rotation mechanism for this large rotating machine. McLaren provided mechanical engineering services for the design of the support bearings, motor, gearbox, and attachment to the steel columns. “How I Roll” is on view at Freedman Plaza in Central Park from June 20 to August 26, 2012.
