LIRR Bay Ridge-Bushwick Line Assessment

LIRR's line at East 83rd Street
Project Overview:
McLaren was retained to provide an in-depth inspection and load rating analysis for this LIRR inspection contract, which included 23 undergrade bridges, 46 over grade bridges, the East Avenue Tunnel, and approximately 2,000 feet of retaining walls. Types of bridges inspected included steel deck girders, thru girders, concrete slab, and steel trusses.
McLaren's Role:
Tasks included data collection, structural integrity evaluation, a materials testing program, and prioritization of structures. McLaren identified substandard conditions affecting the safety, serviceability and the life of the structures, ensured compliance with Article IX of the New York State Highway Law, and proposed solutions to eliminate heavy freight/speed restrictions. McLaren also rated live loads; obtained horizontal and vertical clearances; and identified constraints for double-stacked freight cars, identifying potential expansion and capabilities, identifying fatigue and seismic vulnerabilities.
