Hanging Sculpture Unveiled at Tunxis Community College

This hanging sculpture gives the new library at Tunxis Community College a distinctive flair.

To assist artist Alice Aycock (AYC Ltd.), McLaren Engineering was provided structural engineering services for a hanging sculpture in the new library building at Tunxis Community College in Farmington, CT. Unveiled in April 2008, the sculpture consists of aluminum rings with illuminated plastic spheres, an aluminum “ribbon” shape and an aluminum “scroll” shape, all of which hang via cables from the roof. McLaren performed the design in conjunction with Contractor, Perfection Electricks.

McLaren developed structural and finite element analysis models of each of the three systems in order to determine the smallest size elements that could be used safely overhead in this public environment. The sculptures are intended to appear to be floating in the space, and the cables are all inclined to support the weight and stabilize the assembly in the event of a seismic event.
