Long-awaited Park Opens on Carlstadt Riverfront

CARLSTADT — River Barge Park, a public riverfront park and marina that has been in the works for years, was dedicated Wednesday by state and local officials who lauded it as a serene jewel within an urban region.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony highlighted two of the park's facilities – a paddle center, which will be used to launch boats and canoes, and the Robert Ceberio Environmental Education Pavilion. They sit on 5.5 acres owned by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission.

Since Spring 2010, McLaren Engineering Group (in association with IQ Landscape Architects) has been developing a Waterfront Master Plan for Donahue Memorial Park in the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York. The goals of this Plan are to cultivate ways to better utilize the existing public space; examine the possibility of providing safe public swimming access; improve boating access; upgrade pedestrian connections to the Park from other key points in the Village; and design a safer, realigned roadway relative to the existing CSX railroad crossing.

One of the most impressive New York sites you may have never heard of, Fort Totten is a 149-acre peninsula jutting off the coast of Bayside, Queens, with Civil War–era fortifications, meditative grounds, and views of Long Island Sound. But over the last half-century it has had few visitors, being home to a U.S. Army installation and largely barred to the public until 2005, when the first limited access opened to 50 acres acquired by the New York City Parks Department.

The New York Metropolitan Chapter of the American Public Works Association recognized the Town of Orangetown Highway Department for exemplary performance on the Tappan drainage and road improvement project completed this year. For this accomplishment, the department received the 2009 Municipal Agency Award from the association.
